A Word from the First Officer
As included in the Montville Village Association's newsletter, Montville Happenings

September 2026 Edition

Greetings from Montville Rural Fire Brigade,

As I wrote in the last article in July, the development of a very strong El Niño, and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which at the moment is sitting in a neutral phase, is likely to enter a positive phase during the spring and summer. With this, there will most likely be less rain and higher temperatures during the spring and summer period.

As in the last article, I encourage everyone to keep their properties clear of volatile fuels, namely dry grass and other vegetation. As we have experienced a lot of rain since late last year, there is now an abundance of grass and vegetation around, which could dry out and create a fire risk. Please keep all long grass well away from your homes and other structures.

PERMITS. For any fire over two metres in any direction, you need to have a permit, which can be obtained from the fire warden on the number below. If you are doing any permitted burns, you need to have the permit in hand. You also need to advise your neighbours and also Firecom by ringing 1800 354 621, to advise of your intention to conduct the burn. They will also ask for other details on the permit.

The phone number is for permits only.

If you want to have a small fire that is well under two metres in any direction, and therefore no permit required, you still need to advise your neighbours of your intention to do a burn.

In both of the above cases, you need to be in attendance, until the fire has been extinguished. You also need to have a means of extinguishing the fire, so a hose with a reliable supply of water.

We’ve just updated our website, which is now located at www.montvilleruralfire.com and includes up-to-date contact information, relevant information on lighting fires, getting ready for fire season, fire bans and more.

If anyone is interested in joining the brigade, please use one of the following contacts, as we would be happy to have you in the brigade.

All the best and stay safe, from Montville RFB.
